Mohammad Younus

Mohammad Younus took his first breath on New Year's Day in 2000 in Lahore, Pakistan, a city teeming with cricketing fervour. The rhythm of leather on willow soon wove itself into the fabric of his early life. Surrounded by a family that cherished the game, Younus tapped into street cricket with abandon, showcasing a natural flair that caught the local coaches' eyes. As the youngest of three brothers, he often found himself in the shadows of older players but quickly became the central figure in any game he joined, driven by an insatiable hunger to improve.

By his late teens, Younus was a promising star in the Lahore youth leagues. His crowning moment came with his selection for the under-19 national team, where he delivered performances that oozed confidence and promise. His professional debut came shortly after, at 18, opening the batting for Lahore in the domestic circuit. The young man’s star began its meteoric rise.

Younus's batting style is a testament to adaptability. Close to the wickets, he exhibits a fierce determination, skilfully negotiating pace and spin with equal adeptness. Known for his impeccable timing and a diverse array of shots, his classic cover drive became a hallmark of his proficiency against seam and spin alike. Although primarily a batsman, Younus occasionally rolls his arm over with a knack for deceiving batsmen with his disguised swing, an invaluable asset when playing on Pakistan's varied pitches.

A highlight of his nascent career was the 2022 series against arch-rivals India. Amidst the tension of a packed Eden Gardens, Younus notched a scintillating 150, securing victory in a tense third Test. This innings carved his name in the annals of memorable cricketing feats and catalysed a fierce rivalry with India's bowling attack. His remarkable temperament under pressure led his team to major championships, including the 2023 Asia Cup, where his crucial half-century in the finals underscored his growing stature.

Despite his relative youth, Younus has already made significant contributions to the game, exemplified by his role in Pakistan's record chase against Australia in 2023.
