Sagi Lakshmi Venkatapathy Raju, affectionately known as “Muscles,” is an Indian cricket player known for his lion-hearted approach to the game. Despite his average height and slight build, Raju has spent a significant portion of his career in and out of the Indian team, always ready to battle on the cricket field. With his fearless bowling style and ability to entice batsmen into making mistakes, Raju has left a lasting impression on the game.
Raju rose to prominence in the late 1980s, emerging as a successor to the talented Maninder Singh. As a finger spinner in the classical mould, he quickly settled into the Indian side and played a pivotal role in their victory against Sri Lanka in the one-off Test in 1990-91. Alongside Rajesh Chauhan and Anil Kumble, Raju formed a formidable spin trio in the early 1990s, capturing the attention of cricket enthusiasts around the world.
However, the mid to late 1990s proved to be a challenging period for Raju’s career. Despite his occasional stellar performances, his overall form suffered, leading to inconsistent appearances in the national team. At times, his attacking bowling approach resulted in conceding more runs than desired, which did not align with the conservative selection approach of Indian cricket.
Nonetheless, Raju’s excellent performances in domestic cricket ensured that he remained in contention for national selection. He was a consistent force in Hyderabad’s bowling lineup and played a crucial role in their journey to the final of the 1999-2000 Ranji Trophy season, amassing an impressive tally of 52 wickets.
Raju’s bowling prowess varied depending on the pitch conditions. He thrived on home soil, claiming an astounding 70 wickets in 15 Tests, while his performance on foreign soil was comparatively modest, with 22 dismissals in 12 Tests. One of the highlights of his career came during the 1994-95 series against the West Indies, where he displayed his best form by taking 20 wickets in just three Tests. Unfortunately, his appearances became infrequent after the 1997-98 series against Australia, and he gradually faded from the limelight.
In December 2004, Raju bid farewell to first-class cricket, officially retiring from the sport. Although his international career may have had its ups and downs, Raju’s contribution to domestic cricket, particularly with Hyderabad, will forever be remembered.
