Welcome to Carsons & Mangotsfield CC

Welcome to Carsons & Mangotsfield CC, a friendly and inclusive cricket club with a rich history. Founded in 1921 and later merged in 1998, we are one of the oldest clubs in the area.

The origins of Mangotsfield CC can be traced back to the 1860s when Dr. Henry Mills Grace, the father of cricketing legend W.G. Grace, formed the club. Their early matches were played next to what is now Mangotsfield United Football Club. Carsons Cricket Club, on the other hand, was established in 1921 for the factory workers of Carsons and played their matches opposite the factory on pitches near Rodway Hill.

Both clubs eventually moved to new grounds, with Mangotsfield settling in Blackhorse Road, and Carsons finding a new home in Sutherland Avenue. Over the years, Carsons established themselves as one of the top teams in the Bristol and District League. As the new millennium approached, the two clubs decided to merge, creating Carsons and Mangotsfield CC in 1999.

In 2010, the club bid farewell to Sutherland Avenue and relocated to Pomphrey Hill, situated close to the original grounds of both clubs. The facilities at Pomphrey Hill are impressive, boasting three all-weather nets, two separate cricket squares, and a pavilion. The club’s thriving academy section has been instrumental in developing talented young players who often go on to represent the club at various levels.

While the adult section of the club faced challenges in recent years, the arrival of new players and the development of young talent has breathed new life into Carsons & Mangotsfield CC. The first team, now featuring a more youthful lineup, has managed to halt the string of relegations. In fact, the club is now focused on creating a fourth team as the 2020s begin.

One of the positive outcomes of the club’s struggles has been the emergence of young players as active committee members. They are actively involved in coaching the younger academy teams, ensuring that the club’s legacy and values are passed down to the next generation. Their energy and enthusiasm have invigorated the club and set it on a path for future success.
