Welcome to Elsecar CC
Welcome to Elsecar Cricket Club, nestled in the quiet pit village of Elsecar between the bustling towns of Barnsley and Rotherham. Established in 1854, our club has a long and storied history of success.
Located in the former mining community of South Yorkshire, our small village club was founded by a group of gentlemen at the beloved Milton public house, which served as our headquarters for over a century. Our first taste of success came in the late 1800s when we won the Wake Challenge Cup three years in a row, despite competing against teams at a higher level. To celebrate our centenary in 1983, a special match was played and the magnificent Wake Challenge Cup was put on display.
From 1895 to 1918, we continued to excel, clinching the Hallamshire League title eight times. As founder members of the South Riding League, now known as the South Yorkshire Senior League, we hold the title as the league’s most successful club, with seventeen league wins and ten Whitworth Cup victories, including a remarkable four-in-a-row from 2005 to 2008. We have also been crowned Yorkshire Council Champions on five occasions.
The Elsecar Cricket Club boasts an impressive roster of nine players who have played first-class cricket for Yorkshire CCC, including esteemed names like Rev Charles Sharpe, Willie Oates, Johnny Wilson, and Lesroy Weekes. Most recently, our local talent Jack Shutt made his Yorkshire CCC debut in the 2020 season, marking a milestone for our club.
Inclusivity and nurturing young talent are important to us, which is why in 2017 we introduced the ECB’s “All Stars” program for children aged 5 to 8. We also extend our facilities to five local junior football teams during the winter months.
Our club’s 150th anniversary in 2004 was a momentous occasion celebrated with matches against the MCC and a Yorkshire CCC X1. Nearly two hundred people attended our Anniversary Dinner, commemorating our rich history.
One of our proudest moments came in 2014 when we were crowned the Black Sheep Yorkshire Champions after a resounding victory over York CC. Despite York’s dominance in the ECB Yorkshire Premier League, we emerged triumphant and etched our name in local cricket history.
We are fortunate to call a picturesque ground with excellent facilities our home. Over the years, we have had the honor of hosting numerous representative games and finals. In 2017, we were delighted to welcome the “Lashings All Stars”, a team of ex-international cricketers who toured the country to support grassroots clubs. The day was filled with junior coaching, a mini-tournament, a corporate lunch, and a thrilling T20 match that saw an Elsecar victory.
Elsecar Cricket Club invites cricket lovers of all ages and abilities to join us in our passion for the sport. Whether you’re a seasoned player or simply enjoy watching the game, our club offers a warm and welcoming environment on and off the field. Come and be a part of our historic and successful cricket journey at Elsecar CC.
