Profile
Welcome to Pudsey St Lawrence CC
Welcome to Pudsey St Lawrence Cricket Club, a friendly, sociable, and inclusive cricket club that has a rich history dating back to 1845. Founded by St. Lawrence Parish Church, our club was established with the goal of improving and organizing leisure activities for young men in the Parish.
Throughout the years, our club has experienced many memorable moments. In 1863-4, an All England Eleven defeated 22 Pudsey cricketers by a slim margin. However, in the return match the following year, Pudsey won by a remarkable 105 runs, leading to the All England team refusing to return due to complaints about the state of the pitch.
In 1889, Pudsey St Lawrence moved to our present-day ground at Tofts Road. The ground was generously leased to us by William Dibb Scales from his Grove House Estate. To prepare the ground, tons of soil were excavated from Greenside railway tunnel, raising the “Chapeltown End” to the height of the present square. Alongside this improvement, a new pavilion was built. At the opening ceremony, William Dibb Scales emphasized the importance of maintaining high moral standards at the club.
Over the years, Pudsey St Lawrence has seen the rise of legendary cricketers. Herbert Sutcliffe played for our 1st XI at the age of 14 in 1911, and Leonard Hutton became a regular player in 1931. Hutton’s remarkable achievements include scoring his first century in 1933 and making the record Test score of 364 at the Oval in 1938. To celebrate this historic moment, the bells of St. Lawrence Church were rung.
The period between 1975 and 1991 marked the most successful era in our club’s history. During this time, our first eleven won six League Championship titles, four Yorkshire Champions Titles, the Priestley Cup, and the National Indoor Cricket League. In 1984, multiple teams from our club also won their respective leagues.
In 1989, Pudsey St Lawrence celebrated a century of cricket at Tofts Road and honored the legendary Leonard Hutton with the opening of the Sir Leonard Hutton Memorial Gates in September 1991.
In recent years, our club has continued to thrive. In 1995, our under-15 team achieved a remarkable victory by winning the National Club’s Cup Competition. Furthermore, our first XI won the inaugural Bradford League T20 Cup in 2009 and successfully defended their title in 2010.
As we continue to strengthen and enhance our facilities, including renovations and refurbishments to our clubhouse and grounds between 2005 and 2010, we invite you to join us and be a part of our rich cricketing heritage. Whether you’re a seasoned player or new to the game, we welcome all cricket enthusiasts to become a member of Pudsey St Lawrence Cricket Club. Get in touch with us today to find out more information or to join our friendly and inclusive club.
