Andro Roki

Born on 12th July 1993, Andro Roki grew up in the cricket-loving town of Kandy, Sri Lanka, where his passion for the game blossomed in the dusty playgrounds and local clubs. As a child, Roki was captivated by the rhythm of bowling, spending endless hours perfecting his craft against makeshift wickets. His early performances in school tournaments quickly caught the attention of district selectors, propelling him into youth leagues where his natural ability to swing the ball both ways stood out.

Roki’s journey to the professional arena was anything but linear. After years of hard graft in domestic cricket, he finally made his first-class debut in 2014 for Kandy’s provincial side. However, it was his debut in the Sri Lankan Premier League in 2017 that truly announced his arrival. In a nail-biting match against Colombo Knights, he showcased his adaptability by taking four crucial wickets in the death overs, turning the game on its head. His performances earned him a spot on the national team the following year.

Throughout his career, Roki has been celebrated for his unique bowling style — a perfect blend of pace and guile. Known for his innate ability to read a batsman’s intentions, he could deliver a deceptive slower ball with the same action as his usual pace, leaving batsmen floundering. While primarily a bowler, Roki’s batting, often underestimated, has been surprisingly effective in crucial situations, employing an adaptable approach that saved Sri Lanka during several lower-order collapses.

Among his notable achievements, the 2021 Test series against England stands out. Roki’s fierce rivalry with English batsman Oliver Smith became a talking point in cricketing circles, particularly when Roki bowled a mesmerising over in Galle, dismissing Smith with a perfectly pitched in-swinger that clinched the series for Sri Lanka. His contribution to Sri Lanka's triumph in the 2022 Asia Cup, where he was the leading wicket-taker, solidified his reputation as a key player for the national side.

Perhaps one of the most defining moments of Roki’s career was his spellbinding performance during the 2023 ICC World Cup. Bowling under immense pressure in the semi-final against India, he carved through their top order, setting the stage for a historic win.
