His cricketing odyssey began on the dusty pitches of Jalandhar, where a precocious love for the game was nurtured amidst intense local competition. By the tender age of ten, Anoop was already earmarked as a prodigious talent, playing against opponents much older and more seasoned.
His prodigious rise through the ranks was nothing short of meteoric. Anoop debuted professionally at the age of 18 for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy during the 2013-14 season, making an instant impact with his adaptable batting approach. His ability to seamlessly shift gears, from robust defence to aggressive power-hitting, bewildered bowlers and thrilled spectators. His knock of 146 not out against Karnataka in only his third match, where he single-handedly steered his team to victory, remains etched in the annals of Indian domestic cricket.
International recognition soon followed, and Singh made his debut for India in the limited-overs format in 2018. Among his significant achievements, Anoop was a pivotal figure in India's run to the final of the 2021 ICC T20 World Cup. His heroics in the semis against Pakistan, scrapping a valuable 73 under pressure and bagging two critical wickets with his cunning seam bowling, not only showcased his talent but also endeared him to fans worldwide, making the Indo-Pak rivalry a personal canvas for his cricketing art.
Anoop’s bowling, characterized by its versatility, is as impressive as his batting. He can oscillate between intimidating pace and skilful spin, utilising the conditions masterfully – a rich arsenal that has often foxed even the best batsmen. His uncanny ability to adapt, whether breaking partnerships or securing runs, has been Anoop's hallmark.
One of his defining moments came in an ODI against Australia in 2022, where he crafted an unbeaten 122 while chasing a daunting 350, leading India to an improbable victory and cementing his status as a match-winner.
While Singh's journey has not been devoid of challenges, including a shoulder injury that temporarily derailed his career in 2020, his resolve and passion have been unwavering.
