Avirup Gupta’s journey into the world of cricket began in the crowded bylanes of Kolkata, a city famed for its ancestral love of cricket. Born on 26th September 1990, Avirup showed an early inclination towards the sport, much to the delight of his family who were ardent cricket enthusiasts. With a natural flair behind the stumps, his role as a wicketkeeper was discovered almost serendipitously during a school match, when the regular keeper was injured and Avirup stepped in, displaying instinctive agility and acumen.

A left-hand batsman and a sporadic right-arm offbreak bowler, Avirup's early strides were marked by his exceptional ability to balance patience and aggression. His break came during the regional under-19 championship where his dynamic performances as a wicketkeeper-batsman caught the attention of state selectors. He made his professional debut with the Bengal Ranji Trophy team, marking the beginning of a noted career as a steadfast presence both behind and in front of the stumps.

Among Avirup's major achievements was his crucial role in Bengal’s Ranji Trophy triumph in the 2015-16 season. Known for his game awareness and sharp reflexes, his stumping of Virat Singh in the final was pivotal. In another memorable match against Karnataka, Avirup's unbeaten 90 steered his team to a dramatic last-over victory, a testament to his cricketing prowess under pressure.

The rivalry with Mumbai was a Chapter of its own in Avirup’s career, often pitched as the battle of technique versus temperament. One particular innings against Mumbai, where he dismantled their bowling attack with a calculated 75 amidst tricky conditions, showcased his ability to adapt and thrive in challenging situations.
