Debasis Sarbeswar Mohanty, popularly known as Debashish Mohanty, is a former Indian cricketer who made a name for himself as a medium pace bowler.
Born on July 20, 1976, in Cuttack, Odisha, India, Mohanty's journey to the national side was a testament to his perseverance and skill.

Coming from one of the weaker states in terms of cricket, Mohanty faced an uphill battle to break into the national team.
However, his talent and determination were too hard to ignore, and he soon found himself representing India on the international stage.

Having impressed the likes of coach K Srikkanth during his time with India A, Mohanty earned his spot in the senior side based on merit.
Known for his ability to generate movement on helpful wickets, he quickly proved his worth as a valuable asset to the team.

While his skills were evident in conditions like those found in England, the Indian selectors often struggled to find the right role for Mohanty in the team.
His versatility as a swing bowler made him an obvious choice for matches in England, but his effectiveness in Indian conditions was limited to specific venues such as Calcutta and Mohali.

Despite the challenges, Mohanty's hard work paid off when he was picked at the last moment to represent India in the World Cup, proving the selectors right.
This unexpected selection showcased his ability to rise to the occasion and perform under pressure.

Unfortunately, his inconsistent opportunities and the emergence of other talented bowlers led to Mohanty being dropped from the national team in 2001.
However, he remained an accomplished performer whenever conditions favored swing bowling.

Mohanty's cricketing career can also be evaluated through his statistics.
Over the course of his international career, he played a total of 45 ODIs and took 58 wickets at an average of 30.19.
His best ODI bowling figures were 4 for 56 against Pakistan.

Following his international career, Mohanty continued to represent Odisha in domestic cricket until his retirement in 2007.
He played a pivotal role in Odisha's success during the Ranji Trophy, contributing both with the ball and in the leadership position as captain.

After retiring from professional cricket, Mohanty ventured into coaching and mentoring young cricketers.
His experience and expertise have been invaluable in nurturing talent and developing the next generation of players from Odisha.

Debashis Mohanty's journey from a cricketer from a weaker state to representing India at the international level is a testament to his perseverance and skill.
Although his career was often hampered by the lack of clarity in his role within the team, his talent for swing bowling remains undeniable.
Today, he continues to make a significant impact in the world of cricket through his coaching and mentorship, ensuring that his legacy lives on beyond his playing days.
