Harmesh Lal's cricketing journey is one that epitomises resilience, passion, and an unwavering dedication to fast bowling. Born on 19th January 1986, in the lush suburbs of Chandigarh, Lal's early encounters with cricket were marked by tennis ball tournaments in the lanes of his neighbourhood. It was here that his love affair with pace bowling began, an ardour fuelled by watching recordings of his heroes, Allan Donald and Glenn McGrath.

Although he was a late bloomer, Harmesh's commitment never wavered. He earned his stripes playing for Punjab in the Ranji Trophy, where his searing pace and ability to swing the ball both ways carved a niche in domestic cricket. His professional debut came somewhat later in life, at the age of 26, but he took the opportunity with both hands. A memorable debut for Punjab saw him dismantle a batting line-up with figures that foreshadowed his potential - a riveting 5/40 that announced his arrival on the big stage.

What truly set Harmesh apart was his performances on rain-dampened pitches, often extracting life where others saw none. His crowning glory came in 2014 when he played an instrumental role in Punjab's Ranji Trophy triumph. With 45 wickets in the season, his record-breaking spree included a fiery spell of 7/23 against Tamil Nadu, a game still spoken of in reverent tones.

International cricket beckoned, and Lal soon donned the national colours, securing his place in the team as a right-arm fast bowler who could also biff the ball lower down the order. While not renowned for his batting prowess, he was capable of delivering crucial runs under pressure, famously scoring a brisk half-century against England that contributed to a thrilling series win.

His rivalry with Sri Lanka's maestro batters is the stuff of cricketing folklore. Lal's spell at the Colombo Test in 2016, a tempestuous duel with Angelo Mathews, stands as a testament to his fiery spirit and guile.
