Mike Powell

Michael John Powell is a renowned English cricket player who has left an indelible mark in the sport.
Born on June 5, 1978, Powell hails from a cricketing family and grew up with a love and passion for the game.
Throughout his career, he showcased his extraordinary batting skills, resilience, and commitment to the sport.

Powell's cricketing journey began in 1997 when he made his debut for Glamorgan, a county cricket team in Wales.
Prior to his debut, Powell spent the off-season of 1996 in Australia, honing his skills and gaining valuable experience.
He started the 1997 season with a bang, making an impressive four hundreds in the opening five games for the second XI.
His exceptional performance earned him a place in the first team, where he made an unbeaten 200 not out against Oxford University.

The following year, due to the retirement of Hugh Morris, Powell secured a regular spot in the Glamorgan side.
In 1998, he scored his first Championship hundred at Northampton and continued to excel with two additional centuries in 1999.
His remarkable form led to him becoming the leading run-scorer for Glamorgan in 2002, a year in which they won the domestic one-day competition.

Powell's outstanding performances caught the attention of the national selectors, and he narrowly missed out on being selected for the 2004 NatWest Series squad.
He did, however, receive a call-up as cover following injuries to Marcus Trescothick and Andrew Flintoff.
Although he did not get the opportunity to play, he was included in England's preliminary squad for the 2004 ICC Champions Trophy.

Unfortunately, Powell's international career did not take off as he hoped, and he gradually slipped out of contention.
Despite this setback, he remained a vital asset to Glamorgan and was named their Player-of-the-Year in 2006 after scoring an impressive 1327 runs, including back-to-back double centuries.


Tragedy struck Powell's cricketing journey in the summer of 2007 when he had to undergo surgery to remove a rib.
The procedure, which had complications, posed a life-threatening situation.
Fortunately, Powell recovered, and he decided to have the rib buried in Sophia Gardens, a decision that he found both peculiar and exciting.

Despite his recovery, Powell struggled to regain his form, and in 2010, he was dropped from the County Championship side.
However, in 2011, he found a fresh opportunity with Kent, signing a two-year contract with the team.
During his stint with Kent, Powell proved his worth and continued to excel, scoring two centuries for his new employers in the 2012 season.

After the 2013 season, Powell decided to retire from first-class cricket.
Following his retirement, he returned to Wales and ventured into the insurance industry, carving a new path for himself.
