Ranga Liyana's journey into the world of cricket feels like a tale out of a storybook. Born on 24th September 1980 in the cricket-mad town of Galle, Sri Lanka, Ranga picked up his first cricket bat as a toddler. The dusty roads and makeshift pitches of his neighbourhood became his initial grounds, as he tried to emulate his cricketing heroes.

By the time he reached his teens, Ranga's prowess as an allrounder began to catch the attention of local coaches. Boasting a robust right-hand batting technique alongside an intimidating right-arm-fast-medium bowling approach, he was soon making waves in local leagues. His professional debut came in the age of 21, playing for Galle Cricket Club, where he immediately showcased his prodigious talent.

Ranga had a knack for delivering in high-pressure situations. His most significant contribution came during the 2007 domestic season when he played a central role in leading his team to a championship title. On a humid evening at R. Premadasa Stadium, he notched up an unbeaten 85 runs off just 70 balls in a tense final match, which still sends echoes through cricketing circles. As a bowler, he was known for his cunning ability to swing the ball both ways, making him a constant thorn in the side of many seasoned batsmen.

One of Ranga's defining rivalries was against the Colombo Lions, a team against which he consistently performed. The confrontations were electrifying, peppered with fierce bouncers and explosive batting displays by Ranga. His epic duel in the 2009 season, where he took five wickets while conceding only 35 runs, followed by a swift 60, remains etched in fans' memories.

Ranga’s allround abilities provided his teams with significant depth. His ability to bowl long spells with controlled aggression or turn a match around with his bat made him a cherished asset.
