Thomas Lord

Thomas Lord, a prominent figure in the history of cricket, was not only a skilled bowler but also the founder of the prestigious Lord's Cricket Ground. Born into a once-wealthy Yorkshire family, Thomas was raised in Norfolk after his family lost their possessions due to their support for Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745.

It was in Norfolk that Thomas developed his love for cricket and honed his skills in the game. With a passion for cricket running through his veins, he decided to relocate to London, where he joined the renowned White Conduit Club in Islington. Initially, he served as a bowler and general attendant for the club.

Thomas Lord's life took a momentous turn when he caught the attention of the Earl of Winchilsea, who entrusted him with the responsibility of finding a new location for the White Conduit Club. Harnessing his connections and the support of influential figures, Thomas secured land at Dorset Square and established his first cricket ground in 1787. The newly-formed Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) played matches there, marking the beginning of a historic journey.

Undeterred by financial setbacks, Thomas charged a nominal fee of sixpence for entry to the ground, and his venture thrived for over two decades. However, as the area surrounding Dorset Square deteriorated and became notorious for criminal activities, Lord realized the need to relocate the ground. In 1811, he moved the venue to the nearby St John's Wood estate, hoping for a fresh start.

Unfortunately, the St John's Wood estate did not yield the same level of success as Dorset Square. Fortunately, a stroke of fortune intervened when the government passed an act for the construction of the Regent's Canal through the land in 1814. Thomas saw this as an opportunity to once again move his cricket ground a few hundred yards away to its present location.

In 1829, at the age of 74, Thomas Lord, now a widower, made the decision to sell Lord's Cricket Ground to William Ward for the sum of £5000. However, despite the transfer of ownership, he continued to reside in St John's Wood.

In 1830, Thomas acquired a farm in Hampshire, primarily to secure an inheritance for his son, who shared his name. Sadly, Thomas Lord's time in Hampshire was short-lived. Just two years after taking ownership of the farm, he passed away at the age of 76, leaving behind a legacy that forever etched his name in the annals of cricket history.

Thomas Lord's unwavering passion for cricket led him to establish the world-renowned Lord's Cricket Ground. His contribution to the game transcends his skills as a player, as his vision and determination shape the way cricket is played and celebrated to this day. With every match played at Lord's, his memory lives on, reminding cricket enthusiasts of the man behind the hallowed grounds they so passionately adore.
