Aaron Mpho Phangiso, hailing from Garankuwa, South Africa, is a left-arm spinner who made a name for himself in the cricketing world through his impressive performances. One of his notable achievements was claiming the wicket of the legendary Sachin Tendulkar during the 2012 edition of the Champions League T20. This accomplishment helped Phangiso gain recognition on the global stage.
Phangiso’s journey in cricket started as a domestic workhorse, where he plied his trade tirelessly for eight years. However, it was his scintillating performances in the Champions League T20 that propelled him into the limelight and earned him a call-up to the South African national team. He made his debut in both T20 and ODI formats against New Zealand, marking the beginning of his international career.
Known for his unconventional bowling technique, Phangiso utilizes a “natural pause” in his action, making it difficult for batsmen to read his deliveries. This unique aspect of his bowling style allows him to operate primarily as a containing bowler. While not possessing significant variations or prodigious turn, Phangiso’s accuracy and control make him a formidable force on the field.
Phangiso’s early years were spent honing his skills and perfecting his technique during his stint at Northerns. Afterward, he joined North West, where he competed in all formats of the game. However, it was when he earned promotion to the franchise team, the Lions, that he found his true calling in limited-overs cricket. His exceptional economy rates in List A and T20 cricket, averaging less than five runs per over and less than seven runs per over, respectively, cement his reputation as a stifling bowler.
Despite his talent and skill, Phangiso faced tough competition for a regular spot in both his franchise team and the national side. At the Lions, he competed with the likes of Imran Tahir, his international teammate, as well as promising young players such as Dale Deeb and Eddie Leie. Nonetheless, Phangiso managed to establish himself as the first-choice spinner for the Lions in shorter formats, although replicating this success at the international level proved to be more challenging.
Phangiso’s inclusion in South Africa’s squad for the 2015 World Cup represented a significant milestone in his career. Yet, he remained the only player in the 15-man traveling party who did not make an appearance in any of the matches. However, his fortunes changed when he received a maiden call-up to the Test team, as he was named in all three South African squads for the tour of Bangladesh in July 2015.
