Ben Slater bio

Benjamin Thomas Slater, a talented cricket player hailing from England, has made significant contributions to the sport with his impressive skills and determination. Born and raised in Derbyshire, Slater made his mark in List A cricket before making the transition to Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club.

Slater’s prowess in List A cricket cannot be ignored, as he boasts an exceptional batting average of 51.84 in 32 games. This remarkable record caught the attention of Nottinghamshire, who sought to bolster their opening batsmen lineup. In 2018, Slater bid farewell to his home county and joined Nottinghamshire, bringing with him a glimmer of hope for the team.

However, his journey with Nottinghamshire did not begin without some hiccups. In a slightly awkward turn of events, the Notts website prematurely announced his signing and availability for a match against Hampshire. In reality, Slater was still representing Derbyshire at Hove. During his final match for Derbyshire, he experienced a distressing incident when he was struck by a short ball from Jofra Archer, leading to his retirement hurt due to concussion protocols.

Adapting to a new environment, Slater initially struggled to replicate his List A success in the longer formats. In his first full season with Nottinghamshire, he averaged just over 20 in the Championship. Consequently, he found himself sidelined at the beginning of the Bob Willis Trophy the following summer. However, a fortunate turn of events led to a loan spell at Leicestershire, where he promptly showcased his true potential with an innings of 172, his personal best in first-class cricket, against Lancashire.

Slater’s loan stint rejuvenated him, and he was eventually recalled to the Nottinghamshire squad. Displaying resilience, he smashed 142 runs against Lancashire, proving his worth to the team. As the 2021 season approached, he solidified his position in the Championship side, securing his spot as an integral player.

Known for his busy style at the crease, Slater initially exhibited his skills as a left-handed middle-order batsman. However, it was his prowess at the top of the batting order that Notts wanted him to develop further. Derbyshire supporters initially likened his playing style to that of former Lancashire and England batsman Neil Fairbrother. Throughout his career, Slater demonstrated his adaptability and willingness to embrace new roles for the betterment of his team.

Slater’s cricket journey traces back to his early days in Derbyshire. He made his debut for the Derbyshire Second XI in 2009 and eventually earned his first-class debut for Leeds/Bradford MCCU against Surrey in April 2012. Following the conclusion of the English domestic season, he embarked on a cricketing adventure in Zimbabwe. Representing Southern Rocks, he made an instant impact by scoring 89 runs in his debut first-class innings against Mashonaland Eagles.

During the Division Two Championship in 2014, Slater achieved a significant milestone by scoring his maiden first-class century. Not content with just one century, he struck another in the same match, cementing his status as a formidable batsman. By the end of his tenure in Derbyshire, Slater had accumulated a total of four first-class centuries in 65 matches.

Benjamin Thomas Slater’s cricketing journey has been defined by his determination to excel and adapt to new challenges. With his solid batting skills and valuable contributions to Nottinghamshire, he continues to make a name for himself in the cricketing world. As he looks to the future, his hard work and commitment are sure to propel him to even greater heights in the sport.
