Brian Davison bio

Brian Fettes Davison, the talented cricket player from Zimbabwe, was a robust right-hand batsman and an extraordinary fielder. While he excelled during his stint with Leicestershire in England, he struggled to replicate his success while playing for Rhodesia. Nonetheless, his exceptional cricketing abilities and contribution to the game make him a significant figure in Zimbabwean cricket history.

Born on June 5, 1944, Davison grew up with a passion for cricket. He caught the attention of cricket enthusiasts in England while playing with the International Cavaliers. After successfully completing his qualification period, he made his county debut for Leicestershire in 1970. This marked the beginning of a fruitful career that spanned 14 seasons.

Davison’s first notable achievement in English cricket came in 1971 when he won the prestigious Walter Lawrence Trophy for scoring the fastest hundred of the summer. This feat showcased his ability to score runs rapidly, making him a valuable asset to his team. Throughout his career, he crossed the 1000-run mark in a season an impressive 13 times, highlighting his consistency as a batsman.

During his time with Leicestershire, Davison played an instrumental role in the team’s success. He contributed to their Championship win and several one-day titles. His excellent fielding skills added further value to his team’s performance, showing his versatility on the cricket field.

Unfortunately, his time at Grace Road ended on a sour note due to a financial dispute. At the conclusion of the 1983 season, Davison was released by Leicestershire and he made his way to Tasmania in Australia. There, he continued to demonstrate his cricketing prowess, enjoying a productive late career.

Davison’s love for Tasmania led him to emigrate there and even become a Member of Parliament. His presence in Tasmanian cricket was invaluable, and his contributions to the game were appreciated by both teammates and fans alike.

In 1985, Davison returned to England for one final summer of cricket with Gloucestershire. It served as a fitting end to his career, as he bid farewell to the English cricketing arena.

While his international career for Rhodesia did not yield the same success as his time in England and Tasmania, Davison had his moment in the sun during the final of the Datsun Shield in 1977-78. In this significant match, he scored an unbeaten 102 runs, leading his team to their first major South African trophy. Additionally, Davison showcased his athletic abilities by representing his country in hockey, further demonstrating his multi-dimensional talent.

Brian Fettes Davison’s cricketing journey was one marked by exceptional performances, consistent run-scoring, and outstanding fielding skills. His contributions to Leicestershire cricket, his productive years in Tasmania, and his achievements in Rhodesian cricket have left an indelible mark on the sport. Today, he is remembered as a celebrated cricket player and a valuable asset to the cricketing community in Zimbabwe.
