Chandu Borde bio

Chandrakant Gulabrao Borde, commonly known as Chandu Borde, was a prominent Indian cricketer who left an indelible mark on the sport of cricket during the late fifties to the late sixties. Born on August 21, 1934, in Pune, Maharashtra, Borde became recognized as one of the country’s most promising young batsmen, talented all-rounders, and a reliable pillar of the Indian batting lineup.

With an aptitude for every stroke in the book, Borde’s batting style was heavily influenced by his idol, Vijay Hazare. However, he added an element of adventure to his game, making his presence at the crease a thrilling spectacle. His skill and versatility did not end at batting alone. Borde proved himself to be an exceptional leg spinner, capable of turning the tide of matches in India’s favor, until a shoulder injury in 1964 curtailed his bowling career. His proficiency on the field was another aspect that set him apart, excelling both in the outfield and close-in positions.

Borde’s journey as a cricketer commenced in astounding fashion during his first Test series against the formidable West Indies side in 1958-59. He announced his arrival on the international stage by scoring a scintillating 109 and an impressive 96, leaving an indelible impression on the cricketing world. Over the next few years, he showcased his remarkable all-round abilities, particularly contributing to India’s triumph against England in 1961-62 alongside Salim Durrani. Borde’s prowess against pace bowling was evident during his consistent and elegant performances against renowned pacers like McKenzie, Hall, and Griffith.

The zenith of Borde’s career arrived during the 1966-67 series against the West Indies when he notched up two centuries in three Tests, confirming his status as a dominant force in international cricket. However, his fortunes waned during the subsequent tour of England and the Australasia trip in 1967-68, where he faced mixed luck. As the decade drew to a close, his reflexes slowed, and with the selectors favoring young talents, Borde was unfortunately one of the first casualties.

Nonetheless, Borde’s invaluable contributions to cricket did not cease. He continued to shape the game as the manager of Indian touring teams, utilizing his extensive expertise to guide and mentor young cricketers. Additionally, he served as the chairman of the selection committee, further cementing his position as one of the most respected figures in Indian cricket.

The commendation bestowed upon Borde by being the sole Indian representative in the Rest of the World team for a commemoration match against Barbados in 1967 exemplifies the high esteem in which he was held internationally. Borde’s exceptional skills and contributions to the sport earned him an enduring legacy as one of India’s cricketing legends.

Chandu Borde’s influence on the game continues to inspire passionate cricketers, and his name is etched in the annals of Indian cricket as a true icon. With a career marked by remarkable achievements, he remains a cherished figure in the hearts of cricket aficionados worldwide.
