Christopher Paul Schofield, widely known as Chris Schofield, is a former professional cricketer from England. Born on September 4, 1978, in Accrington, Lancashire, Schofield was a leg-spinner who was known for his unique style and unconventional bowling action. Standing tall with his gangly frame, his loose limbs seemed to have a will of their own.
Despite his unusual appearance, Schofield’s talent as a leg-spinner didn’t go unnoticed. England’s desperate need for a capable leg-spinner led to his fast-track entry into the senior squad in 2000. In August 2006, he was registered by Surrey and his performances impressed the team enough to offer him a full contract for the upcoming season.
Schofield’s remarkable turnaround continued in the 2007 Twenty20 Cup, where he emerged as the leading wicket-taker during the group stages. His outstanding performance caught the attention of the selectors, and Schofield was subsequently named in England’s 15-man squad for the World Championship in South Africa.
Throughout his career, Schofield’s batting skills were also highly regarded. While primarily considered a bowler, he showcased his innovation as a county No. 8. He fearlessly utilized the reverse-sweep and was unafraid to hook the quicks, proving to be a valuable contributor lower down the order.
