Hemp’s cricket journey began at a young age, and he quickly demonstrated his potential during his time at Millfield School. His exceptional record at the school caught the attention of the Welsh Schools sides and junior Glamorgan teams, leading to his debut for Glamorgan in 1991. It was clear from the start that Hemp had a bright future ahead of him.

In 1993, Hemp played a crucial role in Glamorgan’s success in the Sunday League, truly establishing himself as a rising star in the cricketing world. The following year, he showcased his skills on the international stage as he was selected for the England A tour to India and Bangladesh in 1994-95. Although an England career eluded him, it was evident that Hemp possessed the talent and potential to go the distance.

In 1997, Hemp made a move to Warwickshire, where he continued to hone his skills and solidify his place in their top order. However, in 2002, he returned to Glamorgan, his beloved team, to commence a new chapter in his cricketing career. Throughout his time at Glamorgan, Hemp consistently proved himself as a valuable asset, churning out runs even during periods when the team faced adversity.

The year 2007 saw Hemp’s unwavering dedication and contribution recognized when he was appointed as the captain of Glamorgan. Stepping into the shoes of the esteemed Robert Croft, Hemp brought his wealth of experience to lead the team towards greater heights. His leadership skills and commitment were invaluable in guiding the team through challenging moments.

However, in 2008, the county decided to embark on a rebuilding phase, and Hemp was released at the end of the season. Showing his versatility in the world of cricket, Hemp subsequently accepted a position as a cricket coach at Solihull School. Transitioning from player to mentor, he aimed to inspire and nurture young talents, passing on the knowledge he had gained over the years.
