Gladstone Small bio

Gladstone Cleophas Small, born on October 18, 1961, in Barbados, is an English former cricketer who had a significant impact on the game during his career. Although his appearance may not have suggested it, Small was a skilled and dedicated player who contributed to the sport in various ways.

Small’s most memorable moment came during the 1986-87 Ashes series when he was called upon as a last-minute replacement for the England team. In the Boxing Day Test match at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Small surprised the crowd of 58,000 by delivering an outstanding performance. Alongside renowned all-rounder Ian Botham, Small took 5 wickets for just 48 runs, giving England a crucial advantage as Australia were bowled out for a mere 141 runs. This outstanding display of skill and determination played a pivotal role in England’s victory in that match, earning Small the Man of the Match title.

In addition to his bowling ability, Small was admired for his enthusiasm and commitment to the game. He was known as a whole-hearted tryer and a team player who consistently gave his best on the field. Off the pitch, Small was recognized for his amiable and delightful personality, making him a well-liked figure among teammates and opponents alike.

Small’s journey to playing for England was an unusual one. After relocating from Barbados to England at the age of 14, Small narrowly missed the cutoff date for automatic qualification to represent England. However, due to his unconventional appearance, coupled with the presence of nerdy glasses, the registration committee at Lord’s initially dismissed his chance of ever playing Test cricket. Consequently, Small was given the opportunity to join the England team.

Although Small faced challenges in his early career, such as struggling with no-balls and inconsistency, he made necessary adjustments to his approach. He significantly reduced his run-up and became predominantly an outswing bowler, capable of troubling even the most skilled batsmen. This adaptability and hostility were evident when he dismantled Australia’s middle order in Sydney just a week after his remarkable performance at the MCG.

Despite occasional fluctuations in his international career, Small continued to make important contributions to the game. In 1989-90, he claimed eight wickets during a defeat in Bridgetown, showcasing his impact on the England side. Additionally, Small played a key role for Warwickshire during their highly successful season in 1994.

Throughout his playing days, Small remained a significant presence in cricket, remembered for his unlikely appearance, whole-hearted effort, and undeniable talent. His contributions to England’s victory in the Ashes and subsequent performances solidified his place in cricket history. After retiring from professional cricket, Small transitioned into coaching and worked with various teams and young cricketers, imparting his knowledge and experience to the next generation.

Gladstone Cleophas Small’s impact on cricket surpassed his unassuming appearance. His determination, skill, and unwavering commitment to the game remain a testament to his contributions to English cricket.
