James Sutherland bio

James Alexander Sutherland is a former cricketer and current chief executive of Cricket Australia. Born on June 24, 1965, in Melbourne, Australia, Sutherland’s passion for cricket began at a young age.

As a professional cricketer, Sutherland primarily played as a medium-fast bowler. Although he only featured in four first-class matches, his potential as an allrounder was evident both on and off the field. He even served as the twelfth man for Victoria’s Sheffield Shield victory in the 1990-91 season.

After his short-lived playing career, Sutherland embarked on a new journey as a Level III coach. In 1998-99, he accepted a role as a state assistant coach, where he contributed significantly to the development of talented young cricketers. His dedication and knowledge of the game earned him respect among players and coaching staff alike.

In addition to his cricketing pursuits, Sutherland’s educational background as a chartered accountant brought him career opportunities outside of the sport. For six years, he worked as a finance manager with Carlton, an Australian Football League (AFL) club, further enhancing his financial acumen and management skills.

In 1998, Sutherland’s passion for cricket led him to join the Australian Cricket Board (ACB, now known as Cricket Australia) as a general manager, commercial. Here, he played a pivotal role in shaping the commercial aspects of Australian cricket, contributing to its growth and success.

During his tenure at the ACB, Sutherland found himself in the midst of a challenging period for Australian cricket. He became heavily involved in a bitter pay dispute between the board and its players, demonstrating his ability to navigate complex negotiations and find common ground for the benefit of the sport.

In recognition of his exceptional leadership skills and unwavering commitment to cricket, Sutherland assumed the position of chief executive of the ACB in July 2001, following the departure of Malcolm Speed. This appointment cemented his place in cricket administration and afforded him the opportunity to shape the future of the game in Australia.

Beyond his administrative role, Sutherland remains an integral part of the cricketing community. As a life member of the Melbourne University club, he continues to contribute to the growth and success of the club, not only as a player but also as a coach. Throughout his 17-year career, Sutherland played a crucial role in three first-grade premierships, leaving a lasting impact on the club’s history.

James Alexander Sutherland’s contributions to the world of cricket extend far beyond his playing days. As the chief executive of Cricket Australia, he continues to steer the sport towards new heights, ensuring its continued growth and popularity. His dedication, leadership, and love for the game make him an influential figure in Australian cricket.
