Keith Barker Bio

Keith Hubert Douglas Barker is a former footballer turned cricketer from England who made a name for himself as a talented left-arm swing bowler. Born on August 5th, 1987, in England, Barker initially declined an offer from Lancashire at the age of 16 and chose to pursue a career in football instead. He enjoyed success as a striker, representing England at the U-18, U-19, and U-20 levels.

After signing for Blackburn Rovers, Barker’s football journey took a detour as he played for Rochdale Town and later Northwich Victoria. However, by the age of 21, it became evident that his football career was not progressing as he had hoped. Lancashire initially showed little interest in having him back, leading Barker to showcase his skills in club cricket with Enfield in the Lancashire League. It was during this time that he impressed with a century in a trial match, catching the attention of Warwickshire.

In August 2008, Warwickshire offered Barker a contract, and he made the decision to shift his sporting focus to cricket. From there, his career gained momentum. Barker’s left-arm swing bowling proved to be a valuable asset, and he quickly made a mark in Warwickshire’s squad. By the end of the 2018 season, Barker had amassed an impressive record of 357 first-class wickets at an average of 25.51. Additionally, he showcased his batting prowess with six first-class centuries at an average of 28.64.

Barker’s contributions were instrumental in Warwickshire’s triumph in the County Championship in 2012, a season during which he was also selected for the England Lions. His breakthrough year came in 2012 when he claimed 56 wickets at an impressive average of 20. He demonstrated his ability to swing the ball and maintained exceptional control, often proving to be a dangerous proposition for opposing batsmen.

Despite his consistent performances, Barker’s opportunity to represent England at the international level never materialized. He remained eligible to represent both England and the West Indies, expressing his willingness to play for either team. While he was not given the chance to showcase his skills on the grandest stage, his reputation as one of the most potent left-arm bowlers in county cricket remained intact.

In 2018, Barker made the move to Hampshire, describing Warwickshire’s offer of a new contract as “an afterthought.” In his first season with Hampshire, Barker showcased his capabilities by claiming 37 wickets at an average of 26.59 in the Championship, contributing significantly to his team’s third-place finish in Division One.

Off the field, Barker comes from a cricketing background. His father, also named Keith, was a cricketer from British Guiana, and his godfather is none other than former West Indies captain Clive Lloyd. Barker shares the distinctive middle name Hubert with his godfather, further linking him to a rich cricketing heritage.

Keith Hubert Douglas Barker’s sporting journey from football to cricket exemplifies his determination and versatility. Although his international dreams may not have come to fruition, his contributions to county cricket and his ability to swing the ball have left a lasting impression on the game. As Barker continues to make his mark in domestic cricket, fans eagerly await further displays of his all-around cricketing ability.
