Van Wyk’s cricketing journey began in his native South Africa, where he honed his skills at Northerns. He demonstrated immense potential as a wicketkeeper-batsman and was considered a strong contender to succeed the legendary Mark Boucher behind the stumps. This move marked a turning point in his career, as his batting prowess witnessed a notable improvement.

Van Wyk consistently secured a spot among the top-ranked batsmen in his state team since joining Central Districts. His exceptional performances caught the attention of the national selectors, earning him a call-up to the New Zealand squad to face the touring Zimbabweans in January 2012. In this series, he showcased his expertise as a specialist opening batsman, solidifying his place in the national team.
