Marchant de Lange bio

Marchant de Lange, the talented cricketer from South Africa, made a remarkable debut in international cricket with his explosive fast bowling skills. Born and raised in Tzaneen, in the northern Limpopo province of South Africa, de Lange’s journey began when he was discovered at a local academy by scouts from the Northern Provincial Union.

Impressed by his raw talent, de Lange made his first-class debut for Easterns during the 2010-11 season. He quickly rose through the ranks and his performances led to his inclusion in the South Africa A squad to face the touring Australians in November 2011. De Lange showcased his skills by taking five wickets in Potchefstroom, earning him a place in the Test squad.

In his Test debut against Sri Lanka in 2011, de Lange made an immediate impact by taking 7 for 81 in the first innings. However, he struggled to replicate those outstanding performances consistently throughout his brief international career. Despite his initial success, he played only one more Test and a handful of limited-overs games over a five-year period.

De Lange’s limited-overs performances were relatively more consistent, and he proved to be a valuable asset as a death bowler. One of his memorable moments came in the third T20 against New Zealand in 2012 when he successfully defended seven runs off the final over, securing a series win for South Africa. He was also picked up by the Kolkata Knight Riders for the IPL in 2012, but unfortunately could only play three games before suffering a stress fracture.

During his quest for recovery, de Lange underwent a remodeling of his action to ensure more stability at the crease. His hard work paid off, and he made his international comeback in mid-2014. However, his chances were limited, and he missed out on the 2015 World Cup. In early 2016, de Lange leaked runs in what turned out to be his final ODI against England.

Despite his international setbacks, de Lange remained a sought-after player in T20 leagues around the world. He represented teams such as the Guyana Amazon Warriors, Barbados Tridents, and Mumbai Indians. In early 2017, he took a bold step and signed a three-year deal with Glamorgan, utilizing his wife’s British passport to qualify as a local player.

De Lange made an immediate impact with Glamorgan, delivering strong performances in all formats. He particularly excelled in the T20 Blast campaign, taking 18 wickets to help his team reach Finals Day. However, injuries plagued him, causing him to miss a significant portion of the 2018 season. Undeterred, he bounced back in 2019, showcasing his aggressive batting skills with a quickfire 58 off 35 balls against Surrey.

Despite his international career ending prematurely, de Lange’s raw pace and ability to hit speeds of 90mph/145kph make him a dangerous bowler. He continues to display his skills in various T20 tournaments, including the Abu Dhabi T10 and the inaugural season of the Hundred.

Marchant de Lange’s cricketing journey demonstrates a player who burst onto the scene with immense potential but had to navigate through setbacks and challenges. However, his determination and passion for the game have allowed him to shine, leaving an indelible mark on the cricketing world.
