Matthew Peter Mott, hailing from the Gold Coast in Australia, is a well-respected figure in the world of cricket. After an impressive playing career, he transitioned into coaching and has achieved great success in both men’s and women’s cricket.
Mott’s journey in cricket began when he attended the Academy in 1995. He quickly made a name for himself in Brisbane grade cricket with his prolific scoring. In 1994-95, he made his debut in first-class cricket and earned a reputation as a solid left-hand batsman. Despite producing valuable innings, including a crucial 86 in the 1996-97 Sheffield Shield final victory, he struggled to secure a regular spot in the Queensland side. Frustrated, he made the decision to relocate to Victoria ahead of the 1998-99 season.
The move to Victoria proved to be transformative for Mott. His determination, work ethic, and team player mindset earned him a place in the upper order of the Victoria team. In his first year with the Bushrangers, he displayed his tenacity with dogged centuries against New South Wales and Western Australia. The following season, he scored an impressive 841 first-class runs as Victoria reached the final for the first time in nine years. One of his standout performances was a remarkable 216 against New South Wales in 2002-03.
Despite his early successes, Mott’s form dipped in the subsequent year, causing him to be overlooked for Victoria’s victorious Pura Cup final side. Nevertheless, his contributions to the team and his ability to perform under pressure earned him a respected place among his teammates and opponents alike.
Following his playing career, Mott ventured into coaching and quickly made a name for himself. He started his coaching journey at New South Wales, where he won the inaugural Champions League T20. He then moved on to Glamorgan before exploring coaching opportunities at the international level. Mott served as a coach for Australia’s men at the 2010 World T20, Ireland at the 2015 World Cup, Australia Under-19s, and KKR in the first two seasons of the IPL.
However, Mott truly made his mark as the coach of Australia’s women’s team. During his seven-year tenure, he guided the team to numerous achievements, including two T20 World Cups, one ODI World Cup, four Ashes series wins, and an astonishing 26-match winning streak in ODIs. His leadership and tactical acumen played a crucial role in the team’s success, and he gained a reputation as one of the finest coaches in women’s cricket.
In May 2022, Mott took on another significant coaching role. This time, he became England’s men’s white-ball coach, offering his expertise to a new set of players in a different cricketing landscape.
