Michael Gordon Bracewell is a talented cricketer from New Zealand who has recently made his mark in international cricket. Born on July 7, 1991, in Palmerston North, New Zealand, Bracewell belongs to the renowned Bracewell cricket dynasty, which has produced several notable cricketers over the years.
Being immersed in a family with a rich cricketing background, Bracewell was introduced to the sport at a tender age of five. Inspired by the legendary Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist, he initially started as a left-handed top-order batsman and wicketkeeper. However, as his cricketing journey progressed, Bracewell developed his offspin bowling skills, adding a valuable dimension to his game.
Bracewell’s cricketing prowess became evident early on when he represented New Zealand at the 2010 Under-19 World Cup, where he played alongside his cousin Doug. Despite starting his international career at a promising level, Bracewell had to wait for over a decade to receive his opportunity at the senior level.
In 2022, Bracewell finally made his long-awaited debut in international cricket, donning the New Zealand jersey in One Day Internationals (ODIs) against the Netherlands. Though he only played three matches during this series, his performances showed great promise and earned him recognition at the highest level.
Impressed by his skills and determination, the New Zealand selectors then included Bracewell in the squad for the Test tour of England. Fate smiled upon the young cricketer when he won his maiden Test cap at Trent Bridge, replacing the captain Kane Williamson, who was unable to play due to a positive Covid test. This unexpected turn of events provided Bracewell with an opportunity to prove himself on the world stage, and he grabbed it with both hands.
Although Bracewell’s international career is still in its early stages, his domestic performances have been impressive. In the 2020-21 season, he amassed a staggering 725 runs, which included four centuries. One of his remarkable centuries was scored while representing New Zealand A, further highlighting his potential. The following summer, Bracewell emerged as the leading run-scorer in the T20 Super Smash, a popular domestic T20 tournament in New Zealand. His consistent performances in the tournament earned him a call-up to the national team for the tour of the Netherlands.
Having been mentored by his uncle John Bracewell and his father Mark, a former first-class cricketer for Otago, Bracewell benefits from a wealth of cricketing experience in his family. His cricketing lineage, combined with his own dedication and hard work, has shaped him into the player he is today.
As Bracewell’s international career progresses, cricket enthusiasts and experts eagerly await his upcoming performances. With his all-around skills, both as a batsman and a spinner, Bracewell has the potential to become a valuable asset to the New Zealand cricket team.
