Paul Horton bio

Paul James Horton is an English cricketer known for his versatility and consistent performances in all forms of the game. Born and raised in Sydney, Australia, Horton later moved to Liverpool and became a part of the Lancashire cricket set-up at a young age.

Horton initially made his mark as a captain in the Under-17 and Under-19 teams for Lancashire. Although he faced initial struggles in breaking into a strong Lancashire team, he finally got his opportunity in 2007 and made the most of it. That season, he scored three centuries in the County Championship, leading to him being honored with the Player of the Year award.

His success continued in the following years, with two more centuries in 2008 and a career-best 173 against Somerset at Taunton in 2009. Horton also spent a couple of English winters playing in Zimbabwe, where he achieved his highest individual score of 209 for Matabeleland Tuskers in January 2011.

The year 2011 was particularly remarkable for Horton, as he played a crucial role in Lancashire’s title-winning season. His batting performances were consistently impressive, although he struggled to convert several scores in the 90s into centuries. Despite this, his technically sound opening batting and adaptability to different batting positions earned him recognition as a reliable and versatile player.

In addition to his batting prowess, Horton gained a reputation as one of the best slip fielders in county cricket. His exceptional fielding skills added value to his overall contribution to the team.

After leaving Lancashire in 2015, Horton joined Leicestershire, where he continued to extend his cricketing career. At the age of 35, he was appointed as the captain of the team after Michael Carberry was replaced early in the season. Horton embraced the fresh challenge and led the team in their rebuilding efforts.

Throughout his career, Horton accumulated impressive statistics, amassing 8,374 first-class runs at an average of 36.09. Although his time at Leicestershire may not have been spectacular, Horton’s consistent performances contributed significantly to the team’s progress.

Despite facing adversity with Leicestershire’s bottom-place finishes in recent years, Horton remained resilient and continued to make valuable contributions to the team. However, he did not receive the captaincy when it was handed over to Colin Ackermann.

Paul James Horton’s cricketing journey reflects his determination, adaptability, and commitment to the sport. With his versatility as a batsman and his exceptional fielding skills, Horton has left a lasting impression on the English county cricket circuit.
