Towards the twilight of his career, Smith encountered a series of hardships that cast a shadow on his cricketing achievements. Following his release from the team, he sold a story to a Sunday tabloid revealing his long-standing battle with drug abuse. This revelation led to a two-year ban imposed by the ECB. Though rendered pointless considering he was already out of the game, the consequences were severe. The scandal cost him his marriage and his home, leaving him destitute for a period of time. However, Smith showed great resilience and made a courageous recovery.
Today, Smith has found solace in a new career path. He dedicates his time to the Prince’s Trust in Britain, contributing his expertise and support to the development of young individuals. Additionally, he works with underprivileged youths in the tough and violent districts of Los Angeles, displaying his commitment to making a positive impact in society.
