Shahriar Nafees bio

Shahriar Nafees Ahmed is a distinguished left-hand opening batsman hailing from Bangladesh. Born on May 1, 1985, in Dhaka, Bangladesh, Nafees has made a name for himself in the world of cricket with his exceptional talent and determination.

Nafees made his first-class debut at a young age of 15 and showcased his immense potential by scoring 350 runs at an impressive average of 35. His remarkable performance caught the attention of Richard McInness, his Under-19 coach, who believed that Nafees possessed both the skills and temperament required to become a future Test captain for Bangladesh.

At the age of 19, Nafees was given the opportunity to represent Bangladesh in their inaugural Test tour of England in 2005. Despite having limited experience in first-class matches, Nafees displayed his composure and resilience. During the NatWest Series, he scored a remarkable 75 runs against Australia, making a strong case for his inclusion in the national squad.

His Test debut came against Sri Lanka in September 2005, where he impressed everyone by scoring 51 runs. Although he occasionally struggled to convert his starts into big scores, Nafees finally showcased his true potential in April 2006 when he scored a scintillating century against Australia in Fatullah. His brilliant knock of 138 runs, laced with 19 fours, helped Bangladesh establish an imposing total of 355 for 5 on the first day of the match.

Nafees’s exceptional performance earned him the title of Bangladesh’s cricketer-of-the-year in 2006, as well as the vice-captaincy for the Champions Trophy held in India. He continued to contribute significantly to the team, scoring a hundred against Zimbabwe. However, he faced difficulties against tougher oppositions during the Champions Trophy.

In 2008, Nafees joined the exodus of Bangladeshi players to the Indian Cricket League (ICL) but was handed a 10-year ban by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB). Determined to revive his international career, Nafees cancelled his ICL contract the following year and was recalled to the national team for the tri-series at home in January 2010.

Despite facing some setbacks, Nafees continued to display his talent on several occasions. He scored fifties against formidable opponents, such as Australia, Zimbabwe, and the West Indies. Notably, in 2011, he played a crucial role in Bangladesh’s Test match against Pakistan, scoring an impressive 97 runs.

Unfortunately, Nafees was not included in the central contracts for 2012, but he remained committed to his passion for cricket. His dedication to the sport and continuous efforts to excel have earned him the respect and admiration of fans and experts alike.

Shahriar Nafees Ahmed’s journey in cricket has been a testament to his unwavering determination and skill. He has showcased his talent at both the domestic and international levels, leaving a lasting impact on the cricketing world. As a left-hand opening batsman, he has defied the odds and carved a niche for himself in the cricketing history of Bangladesh.
