Hewa Kaluhalamullage Suraj Randiv Kaluhalamulla, popularly known as Suraj Randiv, is a highly talented and skilled cricket player from Sri Lanka. Born on January 30, 1985, in Matara, Sri Lanka, Randiv is a tall offspinner known for his gentle action and ability to generate bounce.
Randiv’s cricket journey began as a right-arm fast bowler during his junior years. However, his school discovered a shortage of spinners in their Under-15 side, which prompted Randiv to take up spin bowling. Initially starting as a part-time spinner, he quickly excelled and began picking up wickets regularly. His performances caught the attention of Matara SC, where he represented while still in school.
In 2003-04, Randiv showcased his talent by taking an impressive 23 wickets in four matches during the U-23 tournament. His performances did not go unnoticed by cricket legends Marvan Atapattu and Mahela Jayawardene, who brought him over to SSC. Under their guidance, Randiv honed his skills, learning the art of bowling under pressure and adapting to different field placements.
Randiv had a breakthrough season in 2005-06, picking up 55 first-class wickets. However, he faced a slump in form over the next three seasons. In 2008-09, he bounced back strongly, claiming 43 wickets. His consistent performances earned him a call-up to the national team for the Galle Test against Pakistan, where he became the second-choice spinner behind the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan.
Although known for his excellent fielding skills and valuable contributions as a lower-order batsman, Randiv has struggled to secure a permanent spot in the limited-overs formats of the game. His focus on developing a wide variety of deliveries, which are highly valued in shorter formats, has been overshadowed by other slow bowlers who have shown more commitment in this aspect.
In recent times, Randiv’s position in the Sri Lankan Test team has come under increasing pressure from a talented group of up-and-coming spinners, led by Tharindu Kaushal. Despite the challenges, Randiv continues to work hard to regain his place and make valuable contributions to the national team.
Off the field, Randiv is known for his humble and determined nature. He remains a role model for aspiring cricketers in Sri Lanka, inspiring them to follow their dreams and work hard towards achieving their goals.
Suraj Randiv’s cricketing journey is a testament to his dedication, talent, and relentless pursuit of excellence. As he continues to strive for success, cricket enthusiasts around the world eagerly anticipate the impact he will continue to make on the sport.
