Timothy Hays David, commonly known as Tim David, is an Australian cricketer who has taken the T20 cricket world by storm. Born in Singapore, David was raised in Western Australia and attended Scotch College, a prestigious school in Perth’s leafy western suburbs.
Despite not having a state contract or even a first-class appearance to his name, David’s exceptional performance in the T20 format made him one of the most sought-after players in the world. In the 2022 IPL auction, he was signed by the Mumbai Indians for a whopping sum of INR 8.25 crore (AUD 1.5 million), confirming his status as an elite T20 finisher.
Standing tall at 6ft 5in, David is a powerful middle-order hitter known for his brutal six-hitting abilities. He first caught the attention of the cricketing world in the 2020-21 season when he was recruited by the Hobart Hurricanes. It was during this breakout season in the Big Bash League that he showcased his immense talent and played a pivotal role in his team’s success.
From there, contracts kept pouring in for David as he continued to impress with his performances. He played for Lahore Qalandars in the second half of the PSL and then went on to represent teams like Surrey, Southern Brave, St Lucia Kings, RCB, Multan, and finally Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2022. Despite being dropped early in the competition, David managed to finish the season with the best-ever strike rate for a batter in a single campaign, hitting 16 sixes off just 86 balls.
While his opportunities have primarily come as a finisher, David has also shown the potential to bat at No. 3 and hopes to develop into a versatile T20 batter. His powerful hitting style, reminiscent of his teammate Kieron Pollard, makes him a force to be reckoned with. In addition to his batting prowess, David also bowls handy offbreaks, having switched from seam to spin after a stress fracture in his foot while playing for Western Australia.
David’s impact is not limited to his batting and bowling skills alone. He is also a reliable fielder in the deep, often positioned at long-on or midwicket, making crucial contributions to his team’s fielding efforts.
As a cricketer, Tim David has defied expectations and risen to prominence in the shortest format of the game. Despite not having a conventional cricketing background, he has proved his worth with exceptional performances on the field. With his explosive batting, useful offspin, and sharp fielding skills, David continues to make a name for himself in the world of T20 cricket.
