This innings, coupled with his opening partnership of 413 runs alongside P Roy, set a record for the highest first-wicket stand in Test cricket.

One of his most remarkable performances came in the famous Test match against England at Lord’s in 1952. Opening both the innings, Mankad displayed tremendous determination and skill. Scoring 72 and 184, he defied the English bowlers, even after bowling 97 overs, to produce a remarkable all-round performance. Although India lost the match, his efforts are widely regarded as one of the greatest in Test cricket history.

Mankad’s impact on Indian cricket extended beyond individual performances. In 1952, he played a pivotal role in India’s first-ever Test victory over England at Madras, where his magnificent bowling figures of eight for 55 and four for 53 ensured India’s triumph. His ability to adapt to different match scenarios and contribute selflessly for the team’s cause made him a valuable asset.

His first-class career, which spanned from 1935 to 1962, brought him numerous achievements. During the 1937-38 series against Lord Tennyson’s team in India, Mankad emerged as one of the best players in the series. Topping both batting and bowling averages, with 62.66 and 14.53 respectively, he showcased his immense talent at an international level. Tennyson himself acknowledged Mankad’s skills, stating that he deserved a place in a World XI.

Notably, Mankad’s performances during India’s tour of England in 1946 stood out. He became the first and only Indian cricketer to amass 1,120 runs and claim 129 wickets in a single season. His achievement remains unparalleled, as no touring player has replicated this feat since.

Mankad’s batting style reflected his focused approach. Known for his strong defensive technique and concentration, he possessed a wide array of shots, including a superb cover-drive and the ability to hit effectively to the leg side. As a practical batsman, he adjusted his game as per the match situation, providing stability and support to the team whenever required.

As a slow left-arm orthodox spinner, Mankad mastered the art of deception. Employing both leg breaks and faster variations, he confused batsmen with his deliveries, claiming numerous wickets. Despite battling with an injury during the 1946 tour of England, Mankad continued to excel, showcasing his determination and resilience.

Mankad’s legacy lives on not only through his remarkable individual performances but also through his son, Ashok Mankad, who represented India in fifteen Test matches as a batsman. The duo created a rare and special father-son combination that represented their country at the highest level.
