Glenn Maxwell, a key player for Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the Indian Premier League (IPL), is facing the prospect of missing the remainder of the 2025 season. This news came to light during a match against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) when PBKS captain Shreyas Iyer revealed at the toss that Maxwell has fractured his finger.
Adding context, Maxwell’s fellow Australian and PBKS teammate, Marcus Stoinis, confirmed the injury occurred during a training session before their washed-out game against Kolkata Knight Riders on 26th April. “Unfortunately, Maxi’s broken his finger,” Stoinis said when speaking to broadcasters before the Chennai match. “He broke it just before the last game at training. He didn’t think it was too bad, but it ended up getting pretty bad. He had scans and yeah, the results weren’t great. So unfortunately for Maxi, I think it’s likely he’s out for the tournament.”
Regarding team strategy in Maxwell’s absence, PBKS brought in Suryansh Shedge, choosing to field three overseas players against CSK. Iyer, while addressing the situation, remained optimistic. “It’s very unfortunate that he’s got a fractured finger,” he said. “To be honest, we haven’t decided about the replacements yet, but we are pretty strong in our team’s mindset and what we have outside of our playing XI. We’ve got varieties of players who can win you matches. So we’re going to stick to that as much as possible.”
Maxwell has had a challenging spell with the bat this season, managing only 48 runs in six innings, with four single-digit scores in recent matches. However, he has made some impact with his offspin, claiming four wickets. Despite his batting struggles, he was a significant purchase in the 2025 mega auction at INR 4.2 crore.
As of now, PBKS hold the fifth position on the points table, with five victories from nine matches played.
