Abahani Limited secured their 24th Dhaka Premier League title, but unlike last season’s straightforward win, this year proved more challenging. After losing points early on, they bounced back in the Super League phase. Mohammedan Sporting Club stayed on their heels, leading to a dramatic finale showdown at the Shere Bangla National Stadium, where Abahani clinched victory by six wickets with a significant 56 balls remaining.
Season of Trials
Abahani’s journey wasn’t without its hurdles. Despite their initial struggles, including dropping crucial points in the first phase, they proved resilient. Mohammedan, embroiled in controversy, found their captain Towhid Hridoy serving a suspension after an altercation with umpire Sharfuddoula. The conflict escalated when the umpire and another official resigned in protest, casting a shadow over Mohammedan’s campaign.
Player Perseverance and Controversy
Mohammedan was bolstered by debates off the pitch. Tamim Iqbal called the handling of Hridoy’s ban “laughable,” with his reinstatement sparking further contention. Hridoy, however, fell afoul again and was banned for the crucial final match against Abahani due to accumulated demerit points.
Exceptional Performances
Anamul Haque emerged as a standout performer, amassing 874 runs, including four centuries, earning him a much-deserved recall to the national team. “It’s been incredibly rewarding,” Anamul shared, reflecting on his return. Parvez Hossain Emon and Mohammad Naim also shone brightly with substantial contributions, while Amite Hasan joined the 600-run club this season.
Bowling Brilliance
Abahani’s success was bolstered by consistent bowling, with Mosaddek Hossain and Rakibul Hasan each claiming 30 wickets, their pivotal role in restricting runs proving vital. Fast bowler Mohammad Saifuddin followed closely with 24 wickets, supported by Shoriful Islam’s 21.
Memorable Matches
One of the season’s highlights was Mohammedan’s narrow last-ball win against Gazi Group Cricketers, thanks to Nasum Ahmed’s heroics, which kept them in title contention till the final clash.
The season has been a testament to Abahani’s tenacity and skill, securing yet another title and showcasing cricket’s unpredictable yet thrilling nature.
