Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain, Rishabh Pant, has been handed a fine following his team’s slow over-rate in their defeat to Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Wankhede Stadium. This is not the first time for Pant’s squad this season, marking Delhi Capitals’ second such offence in the IPL 2025.
Pant’s penalty amounts to INR 24 lakhs, while his teammates, including the Impact Player, face fines of INR 6 lakhs or 25% of their match fee, whichever is less, as per the IPL’s code of conduct. LSG chose to bowl first on a sweltering Mumbai afternoon, allowing MI to score 215 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. LSG fell short in their response by 54 runs, being bowled out for 161. Pant, struggling for form this season, managed just 4 runs off 2 balls, making his tally a mere 110 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 98.21.
The result leaves LSG on ten points after ten matches, while MI climbs to second place with 12 points, achieving their fifth consecutive win.
Rishabh Pant’s slow over-rate fine places him alongside others such as Shubman Gill (Gujarat Titans), Axar Patel (Delhi Capitals), and others who have also been penalised this season. Unlike the strict measures in previous years, IPL 2025 does not enforce suspensions for captains on repeated offences but imposes demerit points and financial penalties instead.
Looking ahead, LSG will face Punjab Kings on May 4, Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 9, and Gujarat Titans on May 14. Meanwhile, MI’s upcoming matches are against Rajasthan Royals on May 1, Gujarat Titans on May 6, and Punjab Kings on May 11.
Rishabh Pant and his team need to regroup and focus on reversing their fortunes in upcoming fixtures while ensuring compliance with the tournament’s regulations.
