Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have recruited Urvil Patel, the wicketkeeper-batter from Gujarat, to fill the shoes of Vansh Bedi, who has been ruled out of the 2025 IPL season due to an ankle injury. Patel, aged 26, joins the squad at his base price of INR 30 lakh.
Bedi, originally signed for INR 55 lakh at last November’s auction, didn’t make an appearance for CSK this season before succumbing to a ligament tear in his left ankle.
Patel previously participated in a mid-season trial with CSK, alongside Ayush Mhatre, after captain Ruturaj Gaikwad bowed out with an elbow injury. Now, Patel will join forces with Mhatre, CSK’s youngest recruit at 17, in the main lineup.
This marks Patel’s return to the IPL circuit, having been part of the Gujarat Titans setup back in 2023, albeit without an IPL cap. His recent form has been impressive. In the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, he amassed 315 runs across six innings, boasting an average of 78.75 and a striking rate nearing 230. Despite Gujarat not moving beyond the preliminaries, Patel emerged as the tournament’s top six-hitter with 29 to his name, leaving Rajat Patidar slightly behind with 27 from ten games.
A standout innings against Tripura in Indore witnessed Patel notch a 28-ball hundred, tying for the second-fastest century in T20s. While he wasn’t brought up for consideration in the IPL 2025 auction, his overall T20 credentials speak volumes, with 1162 runs in 47 innings clocking a strike rate of 170.38.
Furthermore, Patel carried his excellent form into the Ranji Trophy, scoring a career-high 140 off 197 balls during the quarter-finals against Saurashtra in Rajkot earlier this year.
With CSK the first to exit the race for the IPL 2025 playoffs, they’re expected to seize their remaining matches as an opportunity to introduce fresh faces like Patel, as they strategize for the upcoming campaign.
