Jaiswal Reconsiders, Seeks to Stay with Mumbai Cricket

Yashasvi Jaiswal has had a change of heart regarding his move to Goa, now expressing his desire to remain with Mumbai for the upcoming 2025-26 domestic cricket season. The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is set to review Jaiswal’s request during its upcoming apex council meeting, expected to convene in around two weeks.

Jaiswal previously sought a no-objection certificate (NOC) from the MCA to relocate to Goa, aligning with his family’s then plans to move. However, a recent letter from Jaiswal to the MCA indicates a shift in his family’s decisions. “He has written a letter to us, but we are in no hurry to take a decision on this because there is time for the next domestic season,” explained MCA secretary Abhay Hadap to ESPNcricinfo. He further noted, “He has said he has not submitted that NOC either with the BCCI or Goa [Cricket Association] yet.”

Jaiswal’s initial decision to consider moving to Goa had been quite the eyebrow-raiser for the Mumbai cricket community. Wasim Jaffer summed it up succinctly: “You don’t leave Mumbai at this age.”

Currently, Jaiswal is still celebrating his recent performances with the Rajasthan Royals (RR) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Unfortunately, the tournament met an abrupt pause due to rising tensions on the India-Pakistan border. For RR, Jaiswal scored a commendable 473 runs across 12 matches, boasting an average of 43 and a striking rate of 154.57, featuring five half-centuries. Despite his efforts, RR was the second team to miss out on playoff chances.

Jaiswal, 23, with roots deep in Mumbai cricket, began his first-class journey with the state in 2019. Over ten games, he amassed 863 runs, with an average of 53.93, including four centuries. His personal best score of 181 came against Uttar Pradesh in 2022. This past domestic season, Jaiswal took to the field for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy against Jammu & Kashmir, though an ankle injury sidelined him ahead of the semi-final against Vidarbha.

Post-IPL, Jaiswal’s focus will shift to the international stage with a five-Test series in England, commencing on 20th June. It will be a key opportunity for Jaiswal to further his cricketing journey and the skills honed in Mumbai could prove invaluable.
