Cricket Malawi’s operations director, Arjun Menon, has tragically passed away at 48. Police in Blantyre, Malawi’s hub of commerce and finance, have begun investigating the circumstances surrounding his death on Sunday.
Menon, who once played cricket for Singapore, brought a wealth of coaching experience from his time with international teams across Chile, Botswana, Indonesia, and Singapore before joining Malawi in 2020.
Expressing deep sorrow, Cricket Malawi president Vivek Ganesan remarked to Nation Online: “As Cricket Malawi, we are devastated by this loss because Arjun did so much to the our transformative agenda. All the successes we have so far are attributed to him. This is a very painful loss.”
Dr. Henry Kamata, CEO of the Malawi National Council of Sports, also paid tribute, noting, “Arjun was a dedicated coach and a passionate advocate for the development of cricket in Malawi. His contributions to the sport were immense and far-reaching, playing a pivotal role in the growth and success of the Malawi cricket team on regional and international platforms.”
Menon’s impact was evident, particularly during his tenure as the Malawi men’s team secured the runner-up position behind Tanzania in the T20 World Cup Sub-Regional Africa Qualifier in September 2024. Concurrently, the Under-19 women’s team excelled by topping Division 2 in the 2025 Under-19 Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier, eventually finishing seventh in Division 1.
His dedication and innovative vision inspired many, marking a significant loss to the cricket community both in Malawi and internationally.
