Ireland have introduced three newcomers to their squad for the upcoming One Day Internationals against the West Indies this month. Cade Carmichael, a promising top-order batsman, and seam bowlers Thomas Mayes and Liam McCarthy have been selected to bolster the team. These changes come as fast-bowling allrounder Mark Adair continues his recovery from a knee injury suffered earlier this year in Zimbabwe. However, Adair is anticipated to be fit for the T20 Internationals that follow.
Carmichael, Mayes, and McCarthy were all part of Ireland A during their 50-over tri-series in the United Arab Emirates last month, facing off against Sri Lanka A and Afghanistan A. Despite Ireland A falling short in the final against Sri Lanka, the trio performed well and earned their places in the senior squad. Notably, McCarthy is also included in the T20I team.
The squad adjustments mean that Gavin Hoey, Graham Hume, and Morgan Topping, who were part of the previous ODI squad, will not be featured this time.
Carmichael has been in excellent form, putting up scores of 107 and 86 for Northern Knights in Ireland’s ongoing List A tournament. He also showcased his skills with an unbeaten 75 against Afghanistan A. Meanwhile, Mayes has taken ten wickets across four matches in the tri-series and six more in domestic competition. McCarthy claimed seven wickets in the UAE and has added four more in the domestic scene.
Ross Adair returns to the T20I squad after missing the Zimbabwe series due to injury, filling in for Hume, Neil Rock, Fionn Hand, and Tim Tector, who have been left out.
“Cade Carmichael has been in the pathway for several years now,” said national selector Andrew White. “His talent, stroke play, and resilience were on full display for the Wolves in April, and his rise over the last couple of years is a real demonstration of how consistent performances – and his ability to adapt his game to conditions – have been recognised with an international call-up.”
White continued, “In a similar vein, two seam bowlers – Liam McCarthy and Tom Mayes – have also been recognised for consistency and demonstrating the ability to step their game up a level at each time of asking. Both players offer something different to the squad – Mayes with his height and accuracy, while McCarthy brings a slightly different dynamic to our attack and will certainly challenge the batters’ techniques.”
These matches mark the West Indies’ first visit to Ireland since 2019, with ODIs scheduled for the 21st, 23rd, and 25th of May in Clontarf, followed by T20Is on the 12th, 14th, and 15th of June in Bready.
