In response to the monsoon season and recent weather disruptions, the Indian Premier League (IPL) has introduced a new rule allowing for an additional 120 minutes to complete league games, ensuring the opportunity for full 20-over matches amidst rain delays. Previously, this extension was reserved solely for playoff games.
As the tournament picks up again following a week-long suspension, organisers aim to accommodate rainy conditions by extending playtime. The decision affects the nine remaining matches in the 2025 league phase, eight of which are scheduled for the evening. In these evening games, play can now continue until 11:56 pm Indian Standard Time, enabling matches to start as late as 9:30 pm. Afternoon fixtures, such as the Gujarat Titans versus Chennai Super Kings match on 25th May, can begin as late as 5:30 pm.
Thus far this season, three matches have been abandoned due to rain, compelling teams to share points. The Punjab Kings faced the first abandonment against Kolkata Knight Riders, followed by Sunrisers Hyderabad’s clash with Delhi Capitals. Moreover, without a ball bowled, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) versus Kolkata Knight Riders match was also called off post-suspension.
In a few instances, games have been cut short, as seen when Punjab Kings defeated RCB and Gujarat Titans prevailed against Mumbai Indians despite weather interruptions.
Due to heavy rainfall predictions in Bengaluru up until Thursday, RCB’s final home game against Sunrisers Hyderabad on 23rd May has been moved to Lucknow as a precautionary measure.
