Uncertain Future for CSK as Bangar Questions Dhoni’s Continuation

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are facing a challenging IPL 2025 season, having lost ten out of their thirteen matches. With disappointment mounting, the team must reassess their strategy post-season. Former India cricketer, Sanjay Bangar, suggests it might be time for the veteran MS Dhoni to step down. Meanwhile, Aakash Chopra has advocated for significant changes, proposing as many as seven player releases.

Speaking on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show following CSK’s loss to Rajasthan Royals, Chopra expressed his views candidly: “I’ve got a long list actually. I would release [R] Ashwin, [Ravindra] Jadeja, Rachin Ravindra, Devon Conway, Vijay Shankar, Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi…” Dhoni’s future, however, remains notably absent from this list according to Chopra.

Bangar, however, projects the inevitable: “I think at 43 it’s very tough to play in that competitive environment,” he said, reflecting on Dhoni’s seasoned career. “If I was MS, I would say ‘enough’. ‘I have played whatever I wanted to play, I have looked after the interest of the franchise’… But, you move on.” Bangar respects Dhoni’s contribution but suggests that CSK’s transition can occur without him, even if more time is needed.

Amid CSK’s difficult season, scrutiny has also surrounded all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who has struggled in the number four batting position. Chopra offered a potential solution: “Probably trade him. You have Dewald Brevis as your No. 4. I will bat him at No. 4 [instead of Jadeja].” He went on to identify the current line-up as a temporary fix, suggesting that stronger opening partnerships are essential.

Chopra advises looking for new talent to strengthen the batting order, particularly at the top. “It’s common sense that you will find somebody who can be an absolute banker at the top,” he noted, implying fresh additions could invigorate Ruturaj Gaikwad’s partnership.

This season has been a struggle for CSK, and significant decisions lie ahead. Choosings and changes will define future success. Dhoni’s role, whether continuing or ending, stands as a pivotal part of CSK’s upcoming strategy.
