The Punjab Kings (PBKS) are set to face the Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL 2025 Qualifier 2, with Varun Aaron suggesting that the Ahmedabad pitch might offer a slight advantage to PBKS. This assertion is based on PBKS’s batting strength on such wickets.
“I think the Ahmedabad surface is, first of all, going to suit Punjab. It’ll suit both teams, but Punjab more as such, because they rely heavily on both the openers,” Aaron mentioned on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. He added that playing in such high-stakes environments previously gives PBKS young players valuable experience, equipping them better for the upcoming challenge.
Tom Moody, offering his insights, stressed the importance for PBKS to move past their recent defeat to Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in Qualifier 1, where they were bowled out for 101 in New Chandigarh. Although he considers MI as the favourites, he warns against dismissing PBKS due to their strong performance throughout the season. PBKS’s success has largely been driven by their uncapped players exceeding expectations.
Reflecting on PBKS’s journey, Ricky Ponting, Shashank Singh, and James Hopes highlighted a shift in team mindset and culture as key to their success. “It’s continuing to surround them full of confidence and faith,” noted Aaron, suggesting that a good batting surface could make them competitive again.
Moody pointed out Mumbai Indians’ strong comeback, especially following their triumph over Gujarat Titans (GT) in New Chandigarh, where they posted an impressive 228 for 5. This victory showcased Mumbai’s ability, particularly at the business end of the tournament, to overcome any previous forms of struggle.
Emphasising the advantage of setting a target, particularly for PBKS’s inexperienced batting line-up, Aaron said, “I think Punjab would love to set the tone. Especially in a knockout game like this.” He agreed with Moody that setting a target could relieve pressure on the batsmen, allowing PBKS’s bowlers to capitalise on it.
Both teams are gearing up for a crucial showdown, with PBKS looking to leverage their familiarity with the conditions and MI eager to carry forward their momentum.
