Tragedy Strikes at RCB Celebration in Bengaluru

A chaotic scene unfolded in Bengaluru recently, casting a shadow over the Royal Challengers Bangalore’s (RCB) long-awaited IPL victory celebrations. Crowds amassed at Chinnaswamy Stadium to honour the team’s first title win in 18 years, yet the occasion turned tragic as stampede-like conditions resulted in the loss of at least four lives.

Numerous fans, eager to join the festivity, found themselves caught in the tumult, leading to several injuries. Those affected were swiftly taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Reflecting on the unfortunate incident, Karnataka’s deputy chief minister, DK Shivakumar, shared on social media, “People were supposed to witness RCB’s IPL victory celebrations. The tragedy and death have brought deep pain and shock. My condolences to the deceased. My condolences to their family. Let there be pride, but not bigger than life. I appeal to everyone to please stay safe.”

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia also voiced his sorrow over the situation, remarking, “It is very unfortunate. This is a negative side of popularity… The organisers should have planned it better. My deepest condolences to the family of the deceased. I wish early recovery of the injured.”

He further stressed the importance of adequate planning for such large-scale events, highlighting, “When one organises a victory celebration of this magnitude, proper precautions, safety and security measures need to be taken. There have been some lapses somewhere.”

The joy that was meant to unite fans in celebration became a sombre reminder of the responsibility carried by organisers in managing large gatherings. As investigations continue, the cricketing community mourns the loss and extends thoughts to those injured and their families.

More updates are expected as the situation develops.
