Peter Moor retires, capping a rare Zimbabwe-Ireland Test career

Peter Moor has put away the gloves and bats for good at 35, drawing a line under an international journey that began with Zimbabwe in 2014 and finished with Ireland earlier this year.

The Harare-born right-hander ends with 15 Tests, 49 one-day internationals and 21 T20s to his name. All of the limited-overs caps came for Zimbabwe, while his Test resume is split: eight appearances for his country of birth and seven for his adopted home.

Moor’s last outing arrived in February, the one-off Test in Bulawayo where Ireland edged Zimbabwe. That fixture neatly book-ended a career that started in Mirpur back in 2014, when he debuted in an ODI against Bangladesh. Test and T20 debuts followed in 2016, versus New Zealand and Afghanistan respectively.

A paternal Irish grandmother allowed Moor to pick up an Irish passport. He qualified in October 2022 and was quickly named in squads for the 2023 tours of Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Opportunities in white-ball cricket never came, yet he did add seven Tests in green, including a fifty – cricket shorthand for a score between 50 and 99 – against Zimbabwe last July.

Reflecting on the switch in a 2023 interview, Moor said: “I still believe I’ve got three or four years of good cricket in me at the top level. Even though I might have missed out on a few World Cups for Zimbabwe in the last few years, I hope I can play for Ireland at the next one.” World-Cup chances never materialised, and his Test numbers dipped: an average of 35.53 with Zimbabwe slid to 14.35 for Ireland.

Even so, he joins a select group – just 17 players – to have represented two nations in Test cricket. In an era of increasingly fluid eligibility rules, that remains a noteworthy feat.

There is no formal farewell match on the cards. Moor plans to focus on coaching and family life in Dublin, though he has not ruled out the odd club appearance. A pragmatic end, perhaps, yet one fitting a career built on adaptability rather than headlines.
