Mohindru steps down as Essex chair after CV ruling

Anu Mohindru has resigned as chair of Essex County Cricket Club, a role he took up in 2023, following a tribunal decision that found he had exaggerated parts of his CV more than a decade ago.

Last week the Bar Tribunals & Adjudication Service (BTAS) disbarred the 49-year-old after a five-day hearing and ordered him to pay £55,000 in costs. The panel decided Mohindru had “deliberately exaggerated his academic achievements and qualifications” when applying for work in 2012-13. Although the disciplinary process was legal rather than sporting, its conclusions left Mohindru feeling his position at Chelmsford was untenable.

In a short statement, the county confirmed his departure and outlined the next steps. “Essex County Cricket Club can confirm that club chair Anu Mohindru has stood down as a board member with immediate effect,” it read. “He informed the board of his decision at a meeting on Sunday. Following the meeting the board has decided that Jason Gallian will act as interim chair whilst Vicky Ford will assume the position of interim deputy chair. Essex County Cricket Club would like to place on record its thanks to Anu for his leadership and significant contribution during his time as chair of the club.”

Gallian, the former England opener and current head of the club’s cricket committee, now has the task of steering the club through the closing weeks of the season. He inherits an off-field brief that has already seen two chairs depart inside four years; John Faragher left in 2021 after allegations of racist language, an episode that led the ECB to fine Essex £50,000.

A member of the coaching set-up noted the need for stability, saying the players “just want cricket to be the main focus again”. Whether Gallian remains beyond this interim spell will be decided once the board undertakes a full review, likely in the winter.
