KL Rahul will lead India in the three-match one-day series against South Africa, starting in Ranchi on 30 November, with regular skipper Shubman Gill still troubled by the neck strain picked up during the Kolkata Test earlier this month.
The selection panel confirmed the 15-man group on Saturday. Rahul’s promotion means the side keeps an experienced hand at the wheel, while Gill focuses on rehabilitation. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant returns to the 50-over set-up for the first time since August 2024, named as a second gloveman behind Rahul.
Fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been given a breather after a demanding stretch that included four home Tests, the T20 Asia Cup and the recent ODIs in Australia. Shreyas Iyer is still recovering from a lacerated spleen, so left-hander Tilak Varma keeps his place in the middle-order pool after a solid outing for India A against South Africa A in Rajkot earlier this month.
Tilak has only four ODIs under his belt – and modest numbers so far – but the selectors like his tempo. He sits alongside Virat Kohli, Rahul, Pant and the returning Ravindra Jadeja, who skipped the Australian series. Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy offer spin-and-seam all-round options. Axar Patel, however, misses out this time.
With Gill absent, Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to open with Rohit Sharma. Ruturaj Gaikwad, in sparkling form for India A (scores of 117, 68* and 25 in a 2-1 series win), serves as reserve opener and could slot in if the schedule demands rotation.
Managing pace workloads remains a theme. Mohammed Siraj rests alongside Bumrah, leaving Arshdeep Singh, Prasidh Krishna and the uncapped quick Harshit Rana to shoulder the new ball. Rana, 22, impressed during the recent domestic 50-over competition and earns a maiden call-up.
Hardik Pandya, working through the final stage of rehab for a quadriceps strain at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, has been named in Baroda’s Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy squad that begins on 26 November. Should he come through the first three matches unscathed, the selectors will reassess him for the T20I leg of the South Africa tour. The all-rounder has been out since the Asia Cup in September but did lift the Champions Trophy in March.
The South Africa ODIs fall on 30 November (Ranchi), 3 December (Raipur) and 6 December (Visakhapatnam). The white-ball leg precedes a short T20I series and two Tests later in December.
India ODI squad v South Africa
Rohit Sharma (capt), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli, Tilak Varma, KL Rahul (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), Washington Sundar, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Nitish Kumar Reddy, Harshit Rana, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Prasidh Krishna, Arshdeep Singh, Dhruv Jurel.
Key talking points
• Captaincy: Rahul’s 13th, 14th and 15th ODIs as skipper. His record stands at seven wins from 12.
• Squad rotation: Selectors continue to manage Bumrah and Siraj, trusting younger quicks in less familiar conditions.
• Middle-order mix: Tilak, Pant and Jurel competing for one likely slot if India stick to a four-strong top order plus Jadeja at seven.
• Hardik watch: All eyes on Baroda’s team sheet later this month; India would welcome his seam-bowling overs in South Africa’s summer heat.
Nothing flashy, nothing reckless – just sensible squad management before a long tour. South Africa away is rarely easy, and India have chosen continuity sprinkled with a few calculated gambles.
