Arshdeep handed recall as India bowl first in Indore decider

India opted to chase in the series-deciding one-day international against New Zealand, bringing left-arm seamer Arshdeep Singh in for Prasidh Krishna on an Indore surface that usually rewards the batters.

“Dew shouldn’t play a massive role tonight, and I like having a score to aim at here,” captain Shubman Gill explained at the toss. The figures back him up: the last two times India batted first at the Holkar Stadium they piled up 385 and 399. Only Trent Bridge and the Wankhede have witnessed more 380-plus ODI totals.

New Zealand skipper Michael Bracewell, whose side levelled the series in Rajkot, saw no reason to tinker. “Same XI, same intent,” he said, keeping faith with the combination that chased 302 with seven wickets and 15 balls to spare three days ago.

Key selection move
Arshdeep’s return means India field a left-arm swing option for the first time this series. Bowling coach Paras Mhambrey had hinted at the change yesterday, noting, “A different angle can be handy up front, especially against two left-handers at the top.” The 24-year-old is likely to share the new ball with Mohammed Siraj, while Harshit Rana, more of a hit-the-deck operator, is expected to focus on middle-overs containment.

Conditions and tactics
Indore’s pitch is traditionally flat and the square boundaries are short. Even so, Gill’s decision to bowl feels rooted in recent chasing success rather than fear of a late-evening wet ball. Former India seamer Ajit Agarkar, on commentary duty, pointed out, “If it’s 350 here, you’re still in the game with wickets in hand. Batting second just simplifies the maths.”

New Zealand rely heavily on Devon Conway and Henry Nicholls to blunt the early swing. Should they survive, the middle order of Daryl Mitchell, Glenn Phillips and Bracewell has the power to cash in. India counter with Kuldeep Yadav’s wrist-spin and Ravindra Jadeja’s control, hoping for breakthroughs once the ball softens.

Teams
India: Shubman Gill (c), Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Nitish Kumar Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Harshit Rana, Kuldeep Yadav, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj.

New Zealand: Devon Conway, Henry Nicholls, Will Young, Daryl Mitchell, Mitchell Hay (wk), Glenn Phillips, Michael Bracewell (c), Kristian Clarke, Kyle Jamieson, Zak Foulkes, Jayden Lennox.

With the series tied 1-1, both sides understand the margins are slim. “It’s about executing under pressure,” Siraj remarked yesterday. Tonight, Indore gets the final say.
