Lucknow – Uttar Pradesh all-rounder Prashant Veer, the most expensive uncapped signing at this season’s IPL auction, left the field on day one of the Ranji Trophy match against Jharkhand with what medical staff believe is a grade-two tear in his right shoulder.
The incident came in the 30th over, just before lunch. Stationed at mid-off, Veer dived to his right to cut off a firm drive from Shikhar Mohan, saved a certain boundary, but landed awkwardly. He clutched the joint immediately and stayed down for several seconds, prompting the physio to sprint out with a freezing spray.
“He felt a sharp pain as soon as he hit the turf, so we decided not to take any risks,” a Uttar Pradesh support-staff member said. Veer was taken to a nearby hospital for scans and returned with his arm in a sling. Early indications suggest at least three weeks on the sidelines, ruling him out of the remainder of this match and giving Chennai Super Kings an unwanted concern with the IPL less than two months away.
On television commentary, former India physio John Gloster explained that “a grade-two tear is serious enough to need careful rehab, though surgery is rarely required”.
Jharkhand made the most of a placid surface in Veer’s absence, closing on 279 for 1. Opener Sharandeep Singh reached an unbeaten 128—his second first-class hundred—while Mohan contributed 78 and Aryaman Sen 64*. Uttar Pradesh’s attack, already missing the injured Kartik Tyagi, lacked penetration once Veer left.
Both sides remain in the hunt for a knockout berth, so Veer’s absence could still shape the group. The state association is expected to confirm the scan results once specialists in Mumbai have reviewed them.
