Knight handed first ODI chance as NZ tweak squad for South Africa

Seamer Kayley Knight has been added to New Zealand’s 13-strong group for the three-match one-day series against South Africa, starting in Christchurch on Sunday. The 22-year-old, who collected two wickets on T20I debut against Zimbabwe earlier this month, replaces fellow quick Molly Penfold and could make her maiden 50-over appearance.

Head coach Ben Sawyer said, “It’s great to call Kayley up for her first ODI series. Kayley’s got good pace and control, and a short ball that regularly challenges batters.” Knight also impressed for Northern Districts during their title-winning one-day campaign, finishing joint-sixth on the wicket list with 17 victims at 13.76 and conceding fewer than four an over—numbers that helped tip selection in her favour.

Three experienced players return from injury. Suzie Bates, Flora Devonshire and Georgia Plimmer missed the Zimbabwe fixtures but are fit again, taking the places of Emma McLeod, Polly Inglis and Bella James. Penfold drops out as the only bowling change, meaning the remaining attack of Jess Kerr, Rosemary Mair and off-spinner Nensi Patel is unchanged.

The White Ferns have already secured the T20I series against South Africa 3-1, with a low-key dead rubber to come at Hagley Oval on Wednesday. While the result there is academic, it offers fringe players a last audition before the 50-over contests.

Schedule and venues
• 1st ODI – Hagley Oval, Christchurch, Sunday
• 2nd ODI – Basin Reserve, Wellington, 1 April
• 3rd ODI – Basin Reserve, Wellington, 4 April

All three matches form part of the ICC Women’s Championship cycle, so championship points—and World Cup seeding—are at stake.

What Knight adds
Knight’s calling card is skiddy pace and a tidy economy rate. Domestic coaches point to her willingness to attack the stumps rather than hide on back-of-a-length. The brisk bouncer Sawyer mentioned gives New Zealand a different look when Jess Kerr is resting between spells, something the side has lacked since Lea Tahuhu’s workload was dialled back.

Balance of the batting line-up
Bates’ return should stabilise the top order after a string of middle-over rebuilds against Zimbabwe. Devonshire’s all-court stroke-play and Plimmer’s straight-bat hitting lend depth, though Brooke Halliday’s role at number five remains crucial if early wickets fall.

White Ferns squad
Amelia Kerr (c), Suzie Bates, Flora Devonshire, Izzy Gaze (wk), Maddy Green, Brooke Halliday, Bree Illing, Jess Kerr, Kayley Knight, Rosemary Mair, Nensi Patel, Georgia Plimmer, Izzy Sharp.

Looking ahead
South Africa arrive with a seam trio that enjoys New Zealand conditions, so extra batting resilience could prove decisive. For Knight, a debut may hinge on how much grass covers the Hagley pitch on match morning. Either way, the White Ferns enter the ODIs with momentum, yet mindful that World Cup qualification points reward consistency rather than isolated bursts of form.
