PSL introduces twin-XI option to curb dew factor

The 2026 Pakistan Super League began with an unusual sight: Shaheen Shah Afridi and Marnus Labuschagne strolling to the middle clutching two team sheets each. Under a fresh playing-conditions tweak, every captain may now lodge a pair of XIs with the match referee before the toss, then choose one once the coin has settled.

Clause 1.2.1, inserted into the “Nomination and Replacement of Players” section, spells it out: “Before the toss, each captain may submit two (2) different XI lineups in writing to the PSL Match Referee. Each lineup must include 11 players and a maximum of 4 substitute fielders (subject to Clause 1.2.5). After the toss, each captain must finalise one of the two submitted lineups by signing the selected team sheet. Once the final lineup has been nominated, no player listed in the selected playing eleven may be changed before the start of the match without the consent of the opposing captain.”

The league hopes the move blunts the sometimes-decisive dew that drifts in during evening games across Pakistan. A damp ball tends to skid on, handicapping slow bowlers and gifting chasing sides a discernible edge. By delaying selection, teams batting first can, for instance, retain an extra seamer, while those fielding under lights may draft an extra batter without fearing a spin-heavy attack will unravel late on.

Afridi, leading Lahore Qalandars, admitted he liked the flexibility but cautioned against expecting miracles. “You still have to bowl straight and catch your chances,” he said, sweat already gathering despite a brisk breeze. Labuschagne, captaining the re-branded Hyderabad Kingsmen, called the change “sensible” and joked that his analyst now has “twice the work for the same pay”.

Ironically, the curtain-raiser in Karachi saw little or no moisture. A stiff afternoon wind and thin cloud cover combined to keep the outfield dry and spinners interested. Even so, both skippers handed over their preferred XI only after Ranjan Madugalle flicked the coin, a small but symbolic shift in match-day routine.

Whether the innovation levels the playing field or merely shuffles familiar tactics will become clearer as the tournament wears on. For the moment, at least, PSL sides have another lever to pull in the never-ending contest between bat, ball and nature.
